Auger-Aliassime advances to semis at ATP Finals with upset over Zverev

TURIN — Canadian tennis star Félix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the semifinals of the ATP Finals for the first time in his career with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win over Germany’s Alexander Zverev on Friday.

The 25-year-old from Montreal improved to 2-1 in round-robin play and will face world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz of Spain on Saturday in the semifinals of the elite season-ending event.

Auger-Aliassime, seeded eighth in Turin, claimed the only break of the match in the final game of the first set. After both players held serve in the second set, Auger-Aliassime trailed 4-3 in the tiebreaker before reeling off four straight points, the last two on return, to complete the upset of the third-seeded German.

Auger-Aliassime improved to 4-6 against Zverev. He won both meetings this year, including a third-round victory at the U.S. Open.

The Canadian is 3-4 against Alcaraz, with the Spanish star winning their last four meetings.

No. 2 Jannik Sinner of Italy, the defending champion, and No. 7 Alex de Minaur of Australia meet in the other semifinal.
