Carlos Alcaraz is into the third round of the Cincinnati Open after winning his opening match against Damir Dzumhur.

Alcaraz was handed a bye in the first round of the Cincinnati Open, where the ATP number two is the second seed.

The Spaniard is playing his first tournament since Wimbledon, having lost the final to world number one Jannik Sinner.

Alcaraz withdrew from the Canadian Open in Toronto, but is now back in action as the US Open approaches.

The fourth and final Grand Slam of the season, which Alcaraz won in 2022, returns to New York later this month.

Alcaraz certainly didn’t have it easy against Dzumhur, who he eventually defeated 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 after one hour and 41 minutes.

And perhaps it was the nature of the match that resulted in the Spanish star practising immediately after his victory.

His next opponent may also be behind that decision, with Hamad Medjedovic awaiting the five-time Grand Slam champion next.

Medjedovic overcame Aleksandar Kovacevic in round one before a shock second round win over 26th seed Tallon Griekspoor.

How Carlos Alcaraz performed in his first match since Wimbledon final loss

Alcaraz understandably took time off following his lengthy Wimbledon run, which ended in heartbreak this time last month.

He got the better of rival Sinner shortly before in the French Open final, but failed to repeat those heroics at the All England Club.

Alcaraz will have moved on from that defeat, with his North American hard-court swing now underway in Cincinnati.

Another strong run will be eyed by the Spaniard, who already boasts a stunning five ATP titles this season.

There is, however, also the presence of Sinner in Cincinnati, with the Italian having also decided to skip the Canadian Open.

He thrashed Daniel Elahi Galan 6-1, 6-1 upon his return from Wimbledon, and meets 30th seed Gabriel Diallo next.
