One year ago, tennis great Jannik Sinner became the first Italian to claim the ATP year-end No. 1. at the 2025 Paris Masters. He now stands poised to challenge for the top spot once again.

Sinner opened his Paris campaign on Wednesday (29 October), with a commanding 6-4, 6-2 win over Belgian Zizou Bergs, extending his tour-level winning streak on indoor hard courts to 22 matches.

“It’s a very unique court here," Sinner told reporters after the match. "Usually I've always struggled a bit, so I'm very happy to come through the first match. Very happy how I served today. I was very precise."

"I started off with the break straight away, which gives you a bit more confidence. I’m happy about today’s performance. Let’s see what’s coming tomorrow.”

Sinner is now set to play Argentina's Francisco Cerundolo (No. 21) on Thursday (30 October).

Sinner's win came a day after men's world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz suffered a shocking defeat to Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie (No. 31). His loss has left the door open for the Italian to retake the No. 1 position, if he is able to win in Paris.

Following his exit from the Paris Masters, Alacaraz stands at 11,250 points in the live ranking, while Sinner now follows with 10,600 after today's victory against Bergs.
