Joao Fonseca has sent a message to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina after he suffered another setback.

Davidovich Fokina suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the Washington Open final just two weeks ago.

In that final he had three match points, with Davidovich Fokina also left frustrated at the Canadian Open where he ended up retiring.

The Spaniard appeared to have bounced back from that retirement in Cincinnati, before things began to unravel for him once again.

Fonseca struggled in his first match at the Cincinnati Open this year, but came through it to set up a meeting with 17th seed Davidovich Fokina.

The Brazilian teenager’s struggles continued in his second round match, with Davidovich Fokina leading the match 7-6(4) 4-0 30-0.

However, things started to unfold for Davidovich Fokina from this point, as Fonseca won the next five games.

Davidovich Fokina then retired from the match, which appeared to be related to feeling unwell.

After progressing to the third round of the Cincinnati Open for the first time, Fonseca sent a message to Davidovich Fokina on Instagram.

Fonseca wrote, “Not the way I wanted the match to end. Wishing @aledavidovichofficial all the best and hoping we can battle in many more matches in the future.”

Joao Fonseca now has a big opportunity at the Cincinnati Open

Fonseca is predicted to be a big star for the future, and has already showcased some of that this year after winning his first ATP title in Buenos Aires.

However, it has not been quite as convincing for Fonseca so far on his Cincinnati Open debut, but he believes it is all part of the learning process.

“I know when you’re playing bad, I’m still understanding this because I am young, but I know when you are playing bad and you need to find solutions to win, and those are the matches that you feel like it’s the most important and the most going to evolve with,” Fonseca told Tennis TV after the match.

“So, I just stayed and for sure it was a great thing for me, it was a great thing for my development and my future.”

After taking 17th seed Davidovich Fokina’s place in the draw, Fonseca now has a big opportunity to reach the last-16 in Cincinnati.

Fonseca will now play qualifier and world number 136 Terence Atmane, who got a surprise win over rising young Italian Flavio Cobolli.

This is a big opportunity for both players to reach the fourth round of a Masters 1000 tournament for the first time.
