Casemiro is following another Real Madrid great with his turnaround at Manchester United

Casemiro is enjoying a turnaround in form at Manchester United, regaining the faith of head coach Ruben Amorim.

Manchester United are on a three-game winning streak, bouncing back after the deflating 3-1 away loss at Brentford.

Casemiro was unavailable for that fixture, and it is no coincidence that Manchester United bounced back to earn three wins after his return.

The Brazilian also missed the other game where United conceded three goals this season, the 3-0 away defeat at Manchester City.

He is United’s best defensive midfielder, seeing off the challenge from the player supposed to replace him, Manuel Ugarte.

Casemiro has returned to form at a great time for his head coach, and for himself personally. He is set to captain Brazil at the 2026 World Cup, and he is also approaching the end of his contract.

Head coach Ruben Amorim has talked up the way Casemiro has bounced back, having fallen behind Toby Collyer in the pecking order back in January.

Casemiro follows Raphael Varane’s turnaround

Casemiro had a terrible 2024, where Manchester United would have sold him if they could. He was not selected for the FA Cup Final, after a poor run of form, with the nadir being Manchester United’s 4-0 loss away at Palace.

He started the 2024/25 season badly too, making mistakes in the 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool under Erik ten Hag.

That’s why his situation looked so desperate in early 2025. But he was able to fight back to reclaim his starting spot, which he has held onto this season.

Casemiro is proving that his ability is still there, combined with his determined mindset, which were both key parts of his success with Real Madrid, where he won five Champions League titles.

His former Real teammate Raphael Varane experienced a similar scenario at Manchester United, where Erik ten Hag dropped him in late 2023.

Ten Hag had a brief spell where he decided that he preferred Jonny Evans at the back and snubbed him for four consecutive Premier League games.

Varane was eventually recalled and helped United to secure a 0-0 draw at Anfield, and held onto his spot until picking up an injury in April 2024.

The Frenchman recovered in time to go straight into Manchester United’s starting line-up at Wembley to face City in the FA Cup Final, and produced a masterful performance to shut down Erling Haaland in a 2-1 win.

It was Varane’s final game for United, he bowed out on a high, with a winner’s medal around his neck.

Casemiro has a long road ahead of him to even get back to Wembley, but this really would be the perfect way to bring his own Manchester United career to a close next May.

Casemiro’s improvement for Manchester United has not gone unnoticed back in Spain, where he spent the best years of his career.
