So for the second time this season the battle was neither won nor lost. But while Liverpool had to settle for another 2-2 draw with Arsenal, there is only one winner in the war at the top of the table.

Liverpool are deserving champions, there is no doubting that. The fact that they sit 15 points above second-placed Arsenal is testament to that.

And, after a spirited comeback at a sun-drenched Anfield on Sunday, perhaps more questions would have been asked about just where exactly the Gunners had been in the first half let alone for large spells of the Premier League campaign

Instead, most of the post-match narrative was dominated and continues to be dominated by the reaction departing Reds right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold received when he entered the pitch as a second-half substitute.

However, one man who was keen to talk Arsenal and their manager Mikel Arteta was Manchester United goalkeeping great Peter Schmeichel, who won five English top-flight titles during his time at Old Trafford.

And Schmeichel, working as a pundit for Viaplay, did not hold back about Arteta, who led Arsenal to FA Cup glory in 2020, in a final played behind closed doors at Wembley because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but has gone trophyless since.

Schmeichel said: "He was employed as head coach. He inherited a team, and that team is the only team that he's won a trophy with. Then it's his own team now.

"And in the process, he has now changed his job description, he's now the manager. So everything is on him. It's not recruitment, it's not the board."

When told by fellow pundit Jan-Aage Fjortoft that Arteta was not solely in charge of transfers at the Emirates, the Dane continued to criticise the former Everton midfielder: 'No, no, no.

"Watch him in the technical area. Arteta is a control freak. He wants his players to play how he wants. He's directing everything.

"You know, you look at Arne Slot, he's so calm. Arteta instructed his players in training, in the team talk.

"Arteta is still playing the game for the players and that would confuse the hell out of me as a football player."

Liverpool have certainly not been confused by their head coach Slot, who has led the club to its second Premier League triumph in five years in his debut season in charge at Anfield after replacing the legendary Jurgen Klopp

The Reds will round off their memorable campaign with a trip to Brighton & Hove Albion on Monday, May 19 before they host Crystal Palace on Sunday, May 25, after which they will receive the league trophy.
