You can probably count on one hand the amount of times Manchester United have produced a performance that has left you on the edge of your seat in the last few years.

United were often renowned as the most entertaining and exciting team to watch during their heyday under Sir Alex Ferguson, but those memories have become more and more distant.

The Reds were so poor last season that they limped their way to a 15th-placed finish in the Premier League. Had the three relegated clubs been any better, United might not have been so lucky.

Under both Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim, United were rarely exciting to watch. Their performances were often slow, laboured and uninspiring.

The challenge for Amorim, with the bonus of a full pre-season to come, is to turn United into an entertaining and vibrant team to watch again. Every team, regardless of what level they play at, aspire to be pleasing on-the-eye, but it is rarely that straightforward.

United's inability to be vibrant and energetic in recent years has often stemmed from a lack of energy and athleticism in the team. However, they are in the process of reinstating those particular qualities this summer.

Matheus Cunha, a Brazilian international, has arrived from Wolves for £62.5million and Bryan Mbeumo is very close to completing a move from Brentford for a fee in excess of £60m.

The duo were among the best players in the Premier League last season, scoring 35 goals between them. They also chalked up 13 assists, meaning they had a direct hand in 48 goals.

Cunha, 26, completed his move to Old Trafford earlier this month and is expected to occupy the left-sided No.10 position in Amorim's 3-4-2-1 system. Mbeumo is highly likely to be deployed as the right-sided No.10.

Both players are renowned for their speed, trickery, energy, creativity and scoring goals. On paper, they are exactly the type of players United have been missing.

Supporters flock to Old Trafford week-in, week-out with the thirst of being entertained. Instead, United fans have often left M16 uninspired in recent years.

Although football has evolved in recent years, with players rarely taking as many risks as they used to, the appetite for entertainment from the stands hasn't wained. Fans love nothing more than seeing a player beat his man and score a goal.

The element of entertainment, however, has been lost on United too often in recent years. But as director of football Jason Wilcox declared when summarising the addition of Cunha earlier this month, it is the club's ambition to become a vibrant and exciting team to watch again.

Wilcox said of Cunha: "He has all the qualities we are looking for as we seek to build a strong, dynamic and entertaining team capable of challenging for the biggest honours."

Many United supporters accept the club is still a few years away of being capable of mounting a genuine title charge, but they still want to see a level of improvement in terms of the entertainment on offer at Old Trafford.

There are no guarantees the addition of Cunha and the expected arrival of Mbeumo will be successes in M16, just as there is no guarantee Amorim will be a long-term success, but United are most definitely signing players of the right ilk to achieve the ambition laid out by Wilcox.

Cunha was one of the most entertaining players to watch in the Premier League last term, often bringing energy and excitement to the table, while Mbeumo's tally of 20 goals tells you everything you need to know about him.

Amid Wilcox's admission about wanting United to create a "strong, dynamic and entertaining team", United are certainly shopping in the right market to acquire the right tools to bring their vision to life. Mbeumo is an excellent player, who regularly attempts to take a game by the scruff on the neck and make something happen.

It is players of his ilk, who are renowned for scoring goals and bringing a sense of excitement to the table, that will help United fulfil their ambition for the season ahead.
