Dockers pair officially request trade moves; premiership Demon makes free agency call

Out-of-favour Dockers pair Will Brodie and Liam Reidy will request trades this October after falling out of favour in Cockburn.

Meanwhile, Melbourne premiership player Charlie Spargo will reportedly depart for North Melbourne as a free agent this off-season.

Ball-winner Brodie desires a move to Port Adelaide, while reserve ruck Reidy has elected Carlton as his new home, Fremantle confirmed on Wednesday afternoon following their exit meetings.

The 27-year-old Brodie, who has played 29 games in purple since being dealt from Gold Coast at the end of the 2021 season, is contracted through 2027, meaning the Dockers and Power will have to come to terms on a trade. Reidy, on the other hand, is uncontracted but not eligible for free agency this off-season.

Brodie played 24 senior matches in a career-best 2022 season but has oddly managed a combined five games in the three seasons since then.

He’ll link up with new Port Adelaide coach Josh Carr, who coached Brodie while he was in charge of the Dockers’ engine room.

Reidy, a 2022 rookie draft pick, provides the Blues with ruck depth behind Marc Pittonet following Tom De Koning’s departure to St Kilda.

“We respect the requests from Liam and Will to seek trades in a hope to get more senior opportunities at AFL level,” Dockers football manager Joe Brierty said in a club statement.

“Will is obviously contracted for 2027, so we will work through that during the trade period to facilitate outcomes for both the players and the Club.”

As for Spargo, the small forward had been weighing his options but has now officially flagged his desire to leave his club of 108 games, per AFL Media’s Cal Twomey. Twomey added the deal is thought to be three years in length.

Having served eight years at the Demons since being picked no.29 overall in the 2017 national draft, Spargo is an unrestricted free agent, meaning he can walk unimpeded to Arden Street in October. The Dees will receive draft compensation for his exit.

Fittingly, Spargo’s father, Paul, played 81 games for the Roos between 1985 and 1992.

Spargo, who’ll be 26 years of age at the start of next season, had his 2024 campaign cruelled by an Achilles injury and managed just 10 senior matches this year amid another injury-interrupted run. The forward also hurt his shoulder while playing in the VFL finals with Casey.

The Murray Bushrangers product’s best season came in the Demons’ 2021 flag-winning campaign, playing a career-high 25 games for personal-best goal, disposal and tackle tallies.

The Kangaroos evidently see their fleet of smaller attackers as an area in need of improvement this off-season, seeking support alongside livewire Paul Curtis.

Jacob Konstanty played 23 games in his first year since crossing over from Sydney, while Robert Hansen Jnr played 12 games and Cooper Harvey seven. However, that trio combined for 19 goals in those 42 games.
