Young talent time: Flynn is in via AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft

Carlton has welcomed Werribee half-forward/wingman Flynn Young with its sole selection in the 2025 AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft.

Possessing genuine x-factor in the front half, Young arrives at the Blues on the back of an outstanding 18 months with the Bees which yielded a VFL premiership.

Highly regarded for not only his classy left foot but also his aerial ability, Young uses his strong running capacity to his advantage and finishes his work when the opportunity arises.

After two seasons on Werribee’s list for two games, Young’s performances in the GFNL with Newtown & Chilwell turned heads, earning him a spot in a powerful Werribee line-up - he hasn’t looked back since.

Incidentally, it was a game against the Carlton Reserves which kickstarted Young’s spot in Werribee’s team, turning heads as a damaging player in attack that can conjure moments of brilliance.

One of his best came in the VFL Grand Final win over Southport, kicking a long-range goal to set the Bees on their way to premiership victory - at IKON Park, no less.

It was written in the stars.

His final performance heading into the mid-season draft did himself no harm, kicking three goals - two of them from well outside 50 - from a career-high 21 disposals in a win over Sandringham.

Carlton Head of List Management Nick Austin said Young’s incredible rise to AFL football in the space of 18 months was built off hard work.

“Flynn has gone from strength to strength in the last little while and we couldn’t be happier to bring him to the football club,” Austin said.

“At 23 years of age, it hasn’t been the conventional path to the elite level for Flynn - what he has shown in his time at Werribee is his appetite for getting the best out of himself and leaving no stone unturned.

“He’s produced some big moments in some big finals at VFL level, and we think he offers something different as a dynamic player in the front half.

“He can play multiple roles, he backs in his ball use and he’s a threat in the air and on the ground: we’re excited to see what he can produce at our footy club.”
