Jacob Newton has become the newest West Coast Eagle after being selected with pick No.9 in Wednesday’s Mid-Season Rookie Draft. The Norwood product was unlucky to miss out on last year’s strong and deep national draft after his under-18s campaign was derailed by a foot injury. But Newton has bounced back in style in 2025, stepping up to senior SANFL level and kicking three goals in each of his last two matches for the Redlegs. The 19-year-old is a powerful 179cm forward-midfielder who is tough in the contest and a tidy left-foot kick.01:19“We are excited to have Jacob join our program from the Norwood Football Club in the SANFL,” said Matt Clarke, Head of List Management and Recruiting.“He was unfortunate to miss being drafted last year after an injury curtailed his year mid-season.“He has worked tremendously hard over the pre-season on rehabilitation and thrust himself back into contention playing four senior games for Norwood kicking seven goals.“He is a dynamic player with real power and speed, while working back to full fitness.“He has played predominantly as a midfielder in his junior football, possessing a strong contested possession rate and excellent clearance work.“His thirst for the contest is strong and he brings flexibility to play multiple roles for us at the Eagles.”Newton joins the Eagles after a season-ending shoulder injury to star forward Jake Waterman opened another spot on the club’s list. His addition to the squad follows Victorian prospect Tom McCarthy becoming a West Coast player with pick one in the Mid-Season Rookie Draft. They join fellow mid-season recruits Jack Hutchinson (pick three, 2024) and Ryan Maric (pick one, 2023) on the current Eagles list.
