38 centuries across a cricketing career is nothing to laugh at. But rather, for Sourav Ganguly, it is one he feels personally embarrassed about: not for any other reason except that it doesn’t stack up to all it could have been.

The legendary Indian skipper, who mesmerized fans alike all through the early 2000s with his elegant batting, scored 18575 runs across his Test and ODI career for India.

But still, the ever-so-competitive Ganguly looks back at it with a tinge of regret: one that set in for having missed many more possible centuries across his career. Almost 30 more, to be a bit more precise.

“I missed out on a lot of hundreds; I should have scored more. Too many 90s and 80s," Ganguly revealed to PTI.

Known for his swashbuckling batting style, the left-hander admitted that it hurts him more to have missed out on the possible milestones despite having possessed the natural talent and swagger.

“I see my (batting) videos when I am alone. When my wife is away, because Sara lives in London, I go to YouTube, and watch and say ‘arre fir 70 pe out ho gaya’ (Gosh, I got out for 70 in this also). I should have scored a hundred. But you can’t change it. "

Ganguly registered 72 half-centuries across his ODI career, along with 35 more in Tests.

But scoring runs wasn’t merely all that he was known for.

India’s beloved ‘Dada’ also served as the captain of the Indian team from 2000 to 2005 in Tests and ODIs (he was ODI captain from 1999), across a tenure that is widely regarded as a turning point in Indian cricket.

Ganguly is credited with transforming India into a competitive and fearless side, especially overseas.

While his leadership is believed to have laid the foundation for India’s future successes under MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli, Ganguly isn’t perfect, and he knows it.

In fact, Ganguly stated that he regretted dropping Anil Kumble, one of the greatest leg-spinners in the world.

“Anil Kumble, a few times, because he was so good," he said.

No one is immune to mistakes. And Dada remains well aware of his own, too.
