Gary Lineker claims Amad's positioning at Manchester United shows teething problems under Ruben Amorim

Gary Lineker has suggested that one Manchester United star under Ruben Amorim painted the full picture of the Red Devils’ performance against Nottingham Forest.

Ruben Amorim watched from the City Ground dugout on Saturday afternoon as Manchester United broke the deadlock over Nottingham Forest in the first half.

Bruno Fernandes’ corner found Casemiro and the former Real Madrid midfielder superbly headed home the ball, with United taking a 1-0 lead into half-time.

However, Nottingham Forest stunned United in the opening five minutes of the second half after Morgan Gibbs-White turned a header past Senne Lammens.

Only two minutes after Morgan Gibbs-White’s equaliser, Forest took the lead in the 50th minute after Nicolo Savona beat a helpless Senne Lammens from close range.

United were left chasing the Premier League match and the Red Devils avoided a shock defeat after Amad Diallo netted a sensational equaliser in the 81st minute.

Gary Lineker thinks Amad Diallo perfectly summed up a lot about Man Utd under Ruben Amorim

Amad Diallo was in the right place at the right time after Nottingham Forest’s clearance from a Manchester United corner landed directly in his path.

The 23-year-old Ivorian winger then produced a sensational first-time volley that flew straight past a helpless Matz Sels and landed in the back of the Forest net.

Gary Lineker admitted that Amad showed a lot of “positives” from Saturday’s 2-2 Premier League result, but the Ivory Coast international also highlighted a problem.

Amad was playing as the right wing-back in Ruben Amorim’s United tactical system and the player was defensively exposed against Sean Dyche’s men at City Ground.

“And Amad was probably a really good example of that [the problems with the system],” Lineker said on The Rest Is Football podcast.

“You could see the positives of his game, but also the fact that he’s not a defender and he’s been asked to play as a wing-back and he’s not a wing-back; he’s a winger or a forward.

“So, you know, so at the minute you can still see where they haven’t necessarily got the players to suit the system.”

What Gary Lineker took away from Man Utd’s performance under Ruben Amorim against Nottingham Forest

United dropped valuable points at City Ground and the Red Devils had been tipped to beat a Premier League relegation-threatened Forest after their recent run of form.

Lineker told Alan Shearer and Micah Richards that he felt that United manager Amorim still has issues with how his players are playing in the tactical system.

“They’re still vulnerable,” he explained.

“I would say, I would say they’re slightly better, which is not, but I think they’re, they’re probably moving in the right direction.

“I still don’t think overall they’ve got the players that necessarily suit the way that Amorim plays.”

United are eighth in the Premier League table after their opening 10 league matches of the 2025-26 season and the Red Devils are only one point outside of the top four.
