India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav is playing for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2025, and on Sunday (April 27), during the Hardik Pandya-led side’s 10th league match of the ongoing season, he entered his name in the history books by becoming the fastest Indian batter to score 4000 runs in the IPL. Surya needed 2714 balls to complete 4000 runs in the IPL. He broke KL Rahul’s record, who crossed the 4000-run mark in the IPL in 2820 balls.

Former West Indies skipper and legendary batter Chris Gayle is the fastest batter to score 4000 runs in the IPL. He needed 2653 balls to cross the 4000-run mark. Former RCB star AB de Villiers is second on the list with 2658 balls to score 4000 runs.

Surya is overall the 17th cricketer in the world to score 4000 runs in the IPL. Among active players, he is only the eighth cricketer who has more than 4000 runs to his name in the world’s richest franchise cricket league.

The 34-year-old right-handed batter from Mumbai, who has been in red-hot form in the IPL this year, needed 33 runs in MI’s match against LSG to cross the 4000-run mark, and he achieved the objective by scoring a boundary on the second ball of the 13th over bowled by Avesh Khan.

During his stay at the crease so far, Suryakumar has hammered four fours and two sixes, and his first six of the match also helped him complete 150 sixes in the world’s richest franchise cricket league.

If during the ongoing match, Surya scores at least 54 runs, then he will break Kieron Pollard’s record of 3412 runs and become the second leading run getter in the IPL for the Mumbai-based franchise. The overall record of scoring most runs in the IPL for MI is held by Rohit Sharma. In 221 matches played so far, Rohit, with the help of two centuries and 37 fifties, has scored 5698 runs. In the IPL, apart from MI, Suryakumar has also played for Kolkata Knight Riders.
