Aussies win toss for series opener; star ruled out after nasty mishap — T20I LIVE

Australian batter Matt Short has been ruled out of Wednesday’s T20 series opener against India in Canberra after undergoing surgery on his finger.

During last week’s second ODI in Adelaide, the Victorian damaged his right ring finger while attempting a slips catch, suffering a deep cut. He top-scored during the run chase with a career-best 74 before playing the series finale in Sydney on Saturday.

Short was forced to undergo surgery in Sydney on Monday, ruling him out of the start of the T20 series against India.

Tasmanian slugger Ben McDermott has been added to Australia’s squad as injury cover, while Short’s setback opens the door for Josh Philippe’s return to the national T20 side as a specialist batter.

The first T20 between Australia and India gets underway at Canberra’s Manuka Oval on Wednesday at 7.15pm AEDT. Australian captain Mitchell Marsh has won the toss — again —and chosen to bowl first.
