Tottenham may be forced to accelerate move for £50m Liverpool player after James Maddison injury

Liverpool still have plenty of business to take care of this summer both in terms of incoming and outgoing transfers.

The Reds have spent a huge amount so far this window, and will shell out even more if they purchase Alexander Isak from Newcastle.

Having spent such a lot already, Liverpool will have to recoup some through sales.

Luis Diaz’s exit for Bayern Munich has helped in that sense, but there is still more work to do.

Darwin Nunez looks set to follow Diaz out of the door, while Liverpool could secure another big sale if they let Harvey Elliott leave as well.

Reports have claimed that Liverpool value Elliott at around £50m. So far, no club have tested their resolve with an offer. But after Tottenham saw James Maddison pick up a nasty-looking injury on Sunday, that could soon change.

Harvey Elliott could cover James Maddison injury trouble

Until recently, West Ham have been the most serious about signing Elliott this summer. However, the Hammers seemingly will not pay Liverpool’s asking price.

Armed with Champions League football and heightened expectations, Spurs could definitely get closer to it.

And after seeing Maddison stretchered off against Newcastle in Seoul on Sunday, Thomas Frank may suddenly have a big hole in the squad.

Son Heung-Min played his final game for Spurs, and with Maddison potentially now set for spell on the sidelines, Frank is down a couple of attacking players.

In terms of playing style, there are similarities between Elliott and Maddison. The Liverpool man is perhaps more forward-thinking, but they are both technically gifted players capable of sprinkling magic on a football match.

If it turns out that Maddison is set to miss a significant period of time, Spurs could replace him with perhaps the closest thing the Premier League has to offer. They may have to move quick to head off other suitors, though.

Elliott sale still feels inevitable

At the end of last season, it had felt like a formality that Elliott would be sold. Having played just 360 Premier League minutes all term, the 22-year-old needed more game time.

Elliott hinted at an exit himself less than two weeks ago, but despite a feeling that he will go, the England U21 star remains at the club.

Nevertheless, after the arrival of Florian Wirtz, there is little expectation that Elliott will play more this season than he did last.

As a result, an Anfield exit does still feel like the most likely scenario for the No. 19.

With Spurs potentially looking for a player of his ilk and time starting to tick in the market, perhaps Liverpool will squeeze out their asking price after all.
