The Premier League has confirmed why Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan's opening goal against Fulham was checked by VAR.

Gundogan opened the scoring for City after Matheus Nunes' chip was saved by Bernd Leno.

The ball fell to Gundogan, who produced a stunning overhead kick to beat his fellow countryman and open the scoring.

Despite seemingly being a fair goal, the Premier League has explained why there was a brief VAR check to see if the goal should stand.

Explaining on their Premier League Match Centre social media account, it was confirmed: "The referee’s call of goal was checked and confirmed by VAR – with Gundogan in an onside position."

As things stand, City do not have to worry about the scores elsewhere thanks to Gundogan's opener.

For City, this year has not been vintage for themselves. Defeat in the FA Cup final last weekend topped off a rare season without silverware, barring the Community Shield, for Pep Guardiola's side.
