Benjamin Sesko has 'unbelievable' trait that fixes huge Man Utd flaw, worst in the Premier League

Manchester United look to have beaten Newcastle to the £74m signing of RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, transforming their beleaguered front line ahead of the new season.

Manchester United finished an appalling 2024/25 Premier League season in 15th place, losing the Europa League final to Tottenham to go without a trophy and facing no European football for the coming season.

Ruben Amorim has moved to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves and Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo to bolster his attack, with Marcus Rashford exiting for Barcelona and others allowed to leave, including Jadon Sancho and Antony.

While it looked like business at Old Trafford may have been finished, United have now agreed a fee with Leipzig for Sesko, persuading Sesko to turn down Champions League football with Newcastle, who also bid for the 22-year-old.

Benjamin Sesko once called ‘better than Haaland’

Sesko previously represented RB Salzburg, replacing Erling Haaland when he joined Borussia Dortmund. Their former coach, Rene Aufhauser, trained both strikers and even described Sesko as the better all-around attacker.

“Benjamin is maybe the better football player, better to play with the team, technically maybe better at the same age,” he told the Mail in 2022. “His natural movements are so good, he’s 6ft 4in tall, fast and has very, very good physical ability.

Sesko scored 29 goals in 79 appearances for Salzburg before moving to their sister club Leipzig, where he netted 39 goals in 87 games.

Haaland also scored 29 goals for Salzburg, but in just 27 games, while he also got 86 goals for Borussia Dortmund before moving to Manchester City, still aged 21.

Sesko solves key Manchester United goals issue

Aufhauser also praised Sesko’s aerial ability, which will be music to Amorim’s ears as he plots an improved season at Old Trafford.

“He’s so smooth with the ball, very good technique, good finishing, and he jumps so high. Very, very, good with the head. It’s unbelievable,” Aufhauser said.

Team Headed Goals (2024/25) Everton 7 Crystal Palace 6 Southampton 6 Ipswich Town 5 Leicester City 5 Wolves 4 Manchester United 4 United were the league’s lowest scorers from headers last season.

United were the Premier League’s lowest goalscorers last season from headers, finding the net just four times by that method – level with Wolves. Only Everton and the three relegated sides scored fewer than United’s total of 44 goals.

And three of Sesko’s 21 goals for Leipzig last term were with his head, with his total goals placing him above top United scorer Bruno Fernandes, giving Amorim more firepower to go with the additions of Cunha and Mbeumo.
