Spain progress, but Switzerland won the hearts of a nation at EURO 2025

Spain are into the semi-finals of UEFA Women’s EURO 2025, beating hosts Switzerland 2-0 on Friday (18 July).

It was end-to-end football in Bern that particularly livened up in the first half when the referee awarded a penalty to Spain for a foul in the area. Despite the usually reliable Mariona Caldentey stepping up to take it, the forward swept the ball wide of the mark.

The reigning world champions hit the post three times, twice in quick succession, but to no avail.

That was until second-half substitute Athenea del Castillo was threaded through on goal, with over an hour gone, to calmly slot home and break the Swiss resolve.

With the floodgates open more chances came as Claudia Pina doubled Spain’s advantage just five minutes later with a sublime solo effort from outside the area.

Despite Switzerland’s best efforts to get back into it, the dream is over for the hosts, who bow out with plenty to be proud of.

Spain, meanwhile, will face either France or Germany in the semi-final on Wednesday (23 July).
