Scottish Cup winners Aberdeen parade trophy through city on open-top bus

Aberdeen supporters have lined the streets of the city for the open-top bus parade to celebrate the team’s Scottish Cup triumph.

The club’s sensational penalty shootout win over Celtic at Hampden ended a 35-year wait to lift the trophy, and players and fans celebrated into the night on Saturday.

There were over 20,000 Aberdeen fans at the national stadium to witness the moment, but many more have now taken to the streets to see the team lead the celebrations on a victory lap through the city.

The open-top bus, led by the Texo Deeside Caledonia pipe band, will set off from Albyn Place at noon, travelling down Union Street, Union Terrace, Schoolhill and Broad Street.

The parade will culminate at the Town Hall, where first team players led by captain Graeme Shinnie will make a balcony appearance with the cup.

The team will then officially be welcomed by Lord Provost Dr David Cameron for a formal civic reception.

“On behalf of the city of Aberdeen, I offer my warmest congratulations to Aberdeen Football Club on their Scottish Cup Final triumph against Celtic,” Cameron said.

“This is a fantastic achievement not only for the football club but for our entire city and it was great to see thousands of Aberdeen fans descend on Hampden Park to support the team and witness their winning performance, a day which I’m sure will live long in the memory of Dons fans.”

Alan Burrows, Aberdeen FC chief executive said: “We look forward to celebrating one of our greatest ever cup victories on Sunday with our supporters.

“This is truly a remarkable achievement for the club and is just reward for the incredible way in which everyone has come together; players, staff and supporters this season to drive us on to success.”

Speaking after the final whistle, manager Jimmy Thelin had said he urged his players to “dream big” to end Celtic’s treble hopes and lift their first major silverware since 2014.

“What can I say about these feelings?” he said. “I think you can hear our supporters and saw their faces, and our players.

“All this week we’ve been trying to visualise how we can win this game and create the belief inside the squad.

“How they competed, when Celtic is a really good team and Brendan an amazing manager, but the way our team competed out there, when they were cramped and tired and they keep believing.

“I’m so proud. They used the energy of all our supporters who travelled down here today.

“They tried to take the extra strength from each other and they were so strong in the penalties.

“What can I say? I’m happy, relieved and tired and I’m going to enjoy this feeling.”
