Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has sent a message to former teammate Scott McTominay after the Scotland international was named as a nominee for the Ballon d'Or. The ex-United academy graduate was nominated for the prestigious individual award among the world's best talent after a historic season with Napoli.

McTominay, who only completed his Old Trafford exit last summer, hit the ground running in Serie A and helped Antonio Conte's side win the Scudetto with his performances inspiring Napoli to the Italian summit. His showings in Italy have ensured that he will be recognised in the conversation with fellow league title winners as well as the likes of Ousmane Dembele, who played a key part in Paris Saint-Germain's triumph in France and Europe.

The 28-year-old was sold by former manager Erik ten Hag last summer as he attempted to fund a move for a central midfielder.

As part of his sale, United bagged £25.7m of pure profit by selling the Scotland international which helped fund the signing of Manuel Ugarte from PSG.

Taking to Instagram, Fernandes shared a post from the official Ballon d'Or Instagram account revealing McTominay's nomination for the forthcoming award.

He wrote: "Buzzing for you my friend."

McTominay will learn his position in the standings when the 69th ceremony takes place at the historic Theatre du Chatelet in Paris on September 22.

He showed his true colours in a recent interview during an appearance at the Wimbledon tennis tournament, as he displayed no hard feelings to his former club.

“I always want the absolute best for Manchester United, it’s been my life for 22-23 years," he said.

“For me, I wish the club all the success in the world and I’ll be with them every step of the way.

"I want them to do well."
