Shock Seamus Coleman development as Everton veteran's retirement plans mooted

Everton fans will be keen to find out which players the club are keeping on with new deals ahead of the summer.

David Moyes has taken on the role at Goodison Park at a time when plenty of change is being made in all aspects of the club’s day-to-day running.

There will be plenty of excitement ahead of the summer and the upcoming move to Bramley-Moore Dock.

But Everton will require a squad good enough to compete in their new state-of-the-art stadium.

Moyes is holding Everton contract talks currently at Finch Farm as the club aim to discover which players they would keep around.

One of the players who is still stuck in limbo is the Everton veteran, Seamus Coleman.

With his future still under scrutiny, the Ireland international’s potential retirement has even been mooted in a shock development.

Seamus Coleman’s Everton retirement mooted

Speaking earlier in the season, Coleman admitted he could leave Everton at the end of the term as his contract comes to an end.

MORE EVERTON STORIES

However, the plan for what next remains to be seen as he is still awaiting to hear whether Everton would like to keep him on.

Speaking to the media, the Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has shone some light on where the right-back’s future may lie.

“He [Seamus Coleman] didn’t tell us [If he will be retiring this season]. And if he did, I wouldn’t tell you. He is a part of our World Cup qualifiers plans,” he said.

It may shock some, but despite playing minimal football, Coleman will be playing for his nation again in the coming weeks.

Everton fans would love Coleman to be handed a new contract but there is a catch.

Coleman has barely played this season having struggled through injuries for a lot of it and, more recently, Jake O’Brien has nailed down the spot at right-back.

There could be one other option on the cards for the defender, though.

What David Moyes has said about keeping Seamus Coleman

Dwight McNeil has hailed Coleman for his leadership qualities which have been shown at Finch Farm.

The right-back may not be playing, but it is apparent those at the club feel he has a lot more to offer than just his footballing ability.

Moyes has called on Coleman’s leadership behind-the-scenes to provide the players with the understanding of what it means to play for Everton.

And that is something which the 61-year-old will be keen to keep around the club for the transition to Bramley-Moore Dock.

“You don’t just keep people for the sake of keeping them because if you did every club would have hundreds of old players. But if we had our way we would try and keep Seamus around definitely. Or give him the opportunity to be around, but he may have something else on,” Moyes said.
