Gary Neville admits feeling ‘sickly’ ahead of Europa League final, ‘Manchester United have an uncanny…’

The Europa League final is two weeks away, and Gary Neville has cast his verdict on the all-English finish in Bilbao.

Manchester United beat Athletic Club 4-1 at Old Trafford to secure a place in the Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur, who eliminated Bødo/Glimt in the semi-finals.

There is a lot at stake in the Europa League, especially for two teams that have struggled in the Premier League this season. It will give United and Tottenham a final chance to qualify for the Champions League despite being destined to finish in the bottom half of the Premier League.

It means United will play in their second Europa League final since 2021, when they lost to Villarreal on penalties. The Red Devils will be looking for a similar result to the one they managed over Ajax in 2017 to become European champions under Jose Mourinho.

Ange Postecoglou is walking on a tightrope at Tottenham too, looking to end their 17-year trophy drought and save his job.

Gary Neville makes Europa League final prediction

Most United fans will be nervous heading into the Europa League because the team has already lost three times to Tottenham in the Premier League and Carabao Cup this season.

Former club captain Gary Neville is backing United to get the desired result in Bilbao, but he admits he is feeling ‘sickly’ due to nerves about the final.

Neville believes Amorim’s side will come out on top against Tottenham when it matters most and referenced his ‘different’ way of thinking to former teammate Roy Keane.

“Roy Keane called it a great game the other day,” Neville told BBC Sport. “That is what Roy would think. My mentality is different. I was a right-back. You know the only thing you can do is lose your team the game.

“Unless you are Trent Alexander-Arnold, you are unlikely to win your team a game as a right-back. It is a huge game. The consequences are massive. I have a sickly feeling in my stomach about this game as a United fan purely because of what is at stake. But I am confident.

“Manchester United have an uncanny knack, even in difficult times and bad times – and this has been a really bad season – of picking up trophies. That is not a bad habit to have as a football club. They still get to finals and do things even though the league form has been awful – and it has been a terrible season.”

United won the FA Cup final against Man City against the odds last season, despite a turbulent campaign. There is no reason Amorim’s side can’t repeat that against Tottenham.

Man Utd injury list ahead of Europa League final

United have to play two Premier League matches before the Europa League final, so Amorim will be mindful of avoiding risks that could see his injury list grow.

Matthijs de Ligt sustained a blow last week against Brentford and missed the semi-final second leg against Athletic Club. The Dutch defender is touch and go to make the final as a result.
