Shubman Gill breaks Virat Kohli's record but falls for 16 in Lord's Test

Shubman Gill broke another record held by Virat Kohli before being dismissed for 16 runs on Friday, July 11. Gill, who is enjoying the best phase of his Test career, broke Kohli's record for the most runs by an Indian captain against England in England. The current Indian captain was set to go past Dravid to break the record for the most runs by an Indian batter in England, before being dismissed by Chris Woakes.

Gill broke several records when he scored 269 and 161 during the Edgbaston Test to guide India to a memorable win. He started the day with 585 runs in four innings and came in as Karun Nair departed, as Joe Root took a sensational catch and broke the record for the most catches in Test cricket. The Indian skipper was solid in his defence, going up against Jofra Archer and the rest of the England pacers as they applied pressure on the pacers.

Gill slowly started to play his shots and slowly went past Kohli, who had posted 593 runs during the 2018 tour. The Indian went past the 600-run mark for the series with a perfect straight drive and needed just a couple of runs to break Dravid's record.

That is when he was forced to defend a delivery that took the outside edge and was taken by the wicketkeeper.

Gill is expected to get another chance in the next innings to go past Dravid's record as the Lord's Test is evenly-poised at the moment as India ended Day two on 145 for three.
