Liverpool transfer news: Federico Chiesa confirms future talks after heroic Bournemouth goal

Liverpool winger Federico Chiesa confirms that talks are to be held over his future as he outlines his transfer stance following Friday's 4-2 win over Bournemouth.

Liverpool winger Federico Chiesa has confirmed that he will hold talks with the club about his future, but he would be delighted to stay and fight for honours at Anfield.

The Italy international had unsurprisingly been tipped to leave this summer after a nightmarish debut season in England, where he made just six appearances in the Premier League and 14 in all competitions.

A return to Serie A has been strongly mooted for the Euro 2020 winner, but no firm proposals have been made so far in the summer transfer window, and he was one of the heroes of the hour in Friday's engrossing 4-2 win over Bournemouth.

After the Reds had blown a two-goal lead given to them by Hugo Ekitike and Cody Gakpo, Chiesa restored the champions' lead with a sweetly-struck volley in the 88th minute, picking out the bottom corner in front of the Kop.

The winger and the crowd both exploded into unbridled euphoria at his first Premier League goal, before Mohamed Salah erased any doubt in the fourth minute of second-half injury time.

Chiesa confirms desire to stay at Liverpool as Arne Slot makes stance clear

Chiesa's belated first English top-flight goal reignited debate about his future, but the 27-year-old confirmed that he is loving life on Merseyside, although he will still sit down with the club to discuss his future prospects.

"I’m very happy at Liverpool! I will speak to the club but I wanna stay here and fight to win many trophies," Chiesa told reporters, before head coach Arne Slot echoed the same sentiment in his post-match press conference.

"As long as he is here he is definitely at Liverpool and I have no reason to believe something is going to change," the Dutchman said. "He's had a hard time last season, getting his match fitness ready.

"Unfortunately for him, he missed out on our Asia tour as well, so then you miss quite a lot, but not only him – Joe Gomez the same and we've lost Conor Bradley. So, all my substitutions were also related to players who probably couldn't go for 90 minutes.

"Federico, when we needed him, I brought him in. At 2-2 you need your No.9, we brought him in and he delivered and that's always positive for your future at the club."

Why Chiesa leaving Liverpool would be nonsensical

Liverpool's primary concerns right now may lie in defence - especially if Friday's display is anything to go by - but a lack of genuine depth in attack has also been highlighted amid a wave of offensive losses.

In addition to the tragic death of Diogo Jota, Liverpool have sold Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez for significant fees, while Ben Doak is said to be close to joining Bournemouth in a deal that will earn the Premier League champions another £25m.

Harvey Elliott's future may also lie away from Anfield, and while Slot does have the extraordinarily talented Rio Ngumoha coming through, his 16-year-old shoulders may not be ready for the physical and mental demands of regular Premier League football.

Furthermore, it is not as if Liverpool broke the bank to bring Chiesa to the club last summer; had he not endured such an injury-hit first term, he could very well have been labelled the bargain signing of the 2024-25 season.

As such, there are few financial and indeed sporting reasons to part ways with the 27-year-old, and the situation should only change if Chiesa suddenly performs a U-turn and voices a desire to leave.
