Former Super Falcons goalkeeper Judith Nneka Chime has praised the Nigeria U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, for their determination and growth at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, expressing confidence that they can overcome Italy in the Round of 16.Chime, who represented Nigeria at the 1999 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2000 Sydney Olympics, shared her thoughts with Sports247 on the team’s overall performance in the tournament.Read Also: TFF President Wallace Karia Hails Historic Feat as Four Tanzanian Clubs Qualify for CAF Group StageThe Flamingos started their campaign on a shaky note, losing their first two matches, but bounced back impressively with a 4-0 victory over Samoa, securing qualification to the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams.Italy, meanwhile, have been in dominant form — winning all three group games, scoring 10 goals and conceding just four, to finish top of Group A.Despite the contrasting starts, Chime believes the Nigerian girls have what it takes to challenge the Italians if they maintain discipline and composure.“Despite the Flamingos’ slow start in the tournament, I’ve been quite impressed with how they’ve responded. It shows growth, mental strength, and a clear understanding of what it means to represent Nigeria,” Chime said.“Facing Italy will be a big test, but I believe this team can compete strongly and advance. If they stay compact defensively, remain disciplined, and take their scoring chances, they have a very good chance of progressing.”Now based in the United States, Chime runs Judith Chime Queens, an amateur women’s football club, and also works in youth academy coaching.“I’m optimistic because the girls have shown resilience and fighting spirit — qualities that have always defined Nigerian women’s football,” she added. “With continued focus and support, they can go far and make the country proud.”Nigeria will face Italy on Wednesday at 8:00 pm kick off.
