Rodrygo’s future could be decided within the next few days, although the Brazilian may have already made his stance clear as Liverpool could be among those waiting to see if there’s a chance of a major transfer coup.

Speculation has grown over Rodrygo’s position at Real Madrid as the summer has progressed. The 24-year-old has been touted for an exit ever since Kylian Mbappe arrived at the Bernabeu, and the rumors have gone into overdrive over recent weeks.

Xabi Alonso has found himself having to answer questions about his forward’s lack of chances during the Club World Cup, and although he insists it has nothing to do with a potential exit for Rodrygo, recent reports suggest he could be on his way out.

Fabrizio Romano has claimed a meeting will be taking place within the next week to decide on Rodrygo’s future, with Real said to be leaving the final decision up to the player.

He has supposedly already ruled out a move to Saudi Arabia, and is focusing on staying in Europe, with a move to the Premier League being talked up in recent days as Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal have all been touted as possible destinations.

However, the possibility of Rodrygo choosing to stay and fight for his place in Madrid can’t be ruled out either, especially considering some of his previous comments when a potential exit has been put to him.

The winger has shown no appetite for leaving the Bernabeu in the past, and around 12 months ago, he seemed to rule out the idea of him ever moving elsewhere.

“This week some media said about bids, clubs, interest… I don’t know anything about it and I’m not interested," Rodrygo told reporters in June 2024. "Even if there are proposals, I have no idea about that… I’m staying. I’m happy here. How can I leave Real Madrid?”

Perhaps that stance has been softened in the subsequent year or so, especially now with Carlo Ancelotti having been replaced by Alonso, leaving him a little more in the dark as to his place in the side.

Should it emerge from his meeting that he is in fact open to a move, then Liverpool may well be among those keen on securing his services - after all, the Reds already tried once.

Rodrygo revealed just last year that he came close to a move to Merseyside back in 2017, when he was a youngster just starting to catch some attention in Brazil with Santos.

His agent even went as far as to claim that Jurgen Klopp flew all the way to South America to try and entice Rodrygo to Anfield. Alas, Liverpool’s efforts wouldn’t pay off.

“We didn’t close the deal because I didn’t want to. I wanted to stay at Santos even though the offer was very good,” Rodrygo explained (via Goal).

“The pathway they promised me would also have been very good for my career. I was going to finish my studies in England to prepare for European football. It had always been my dream to play in Europe.

“Everything was very good, but my desire spoke louder. I wanted to stay at Santos and make a bit of history at the club. And that’s what happened: I was able to fulfil my dream of playing for Santos. But it’s true, I almost went to Liverpool.”

Rodrygo would go on to agree a deal with Real just a year later. Fast forward eight years though, and Liverpool might get a second chance to secure his signature - if he has changed his mind on staying in Madrid.
