Ben Foster Names £150k p/w Star Man Utd Must Sign to Replace Andre Onana

Much has been made of Andre Onana’s hodgepodge spell on the books of Manchester United – and former Red Devils shot stopper Ben Foster has named the goalkeeper that Ruben Amorim and his staff should sign to replace the Cameroonian this summer.

Replacing David de Gea, Onana joined from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023 for a fee in the region of £47 million; but, in his 101-match stay, he’s made a series of high-profile mistakes which overshadow any sort of glimmer of hope.

GIVEMESPORT Key Statistic: Onana is the first goalkeeper to feature in three European finals with three different teams. Incredibly, he’s lost them all.

A 48-cap international, the glovesman was targeted because of his on-the-ball ability. Regrettably, he’s largely flattered to deceive, thus throwing his Old Trafford future into serious doubt, and Foster has pinpointed the goalkeeper the Red Devils need.

‘He’s still one of the best goalkeepers in the world’

Could it be time for Amorim – widely regarded as one of the best young managers in world football – and his entourage to move on? Onana was signed under the stewardship of Erik ten Hag (largely thanks to their shared time at Ajax together) and he’s, perhaps, run his race at the Theatre of Dreams.

Foster, who played 23 times for Sir Alex Ferguson between 2005 and 2010, has insisted that Onana hasn’t proved to anyone that he is capable of performing week-in, week-out at the level that a club of Manchester United’s size and stature desires.

On Onana’s sorry state of affairs inbetween the sticks for the 20-time English champions, per the Daily Mail, he said: “It’s a brutal league, the Premier League, and I kind of think [over] the last two seasons that he hasn’t done enough to prove that he is Manchester United No.1.”

“I think he’s got the ability and, like so many other Man United players, he’d go elsewhere and probably flourish," the ex-Watford and West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper claimed before adding: "I think that’s probably going to be the case with him as well.”

And the goalkeeper-turned-media personality has insisted that Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa – who earns £150,000-per-week, per Capology, in Birmingham – would be his choice should Amorim enter the market in search of a new goalkeeper in the months to come.

“If the opportunity does come to sign somebody like an Emi Martinez, they’ve got to go for it. He’s still one of the best goalkeepers in the world. A lot of people said this season, probably not. Up to the standard of the previous two years, but still one of the best goalkeepers in the world.”

Highlighting the importance of a ‘strong spine’, Foster continued: “You’ve got to have a strong spine in any football team. If you get the goalie right, you get a couple of strikers in, Bruno’s going to be staying now. It’s a great start to the transfer window for them.”

Martinez, alongside the obvious Lionel Messi, was Argentina’s World Cup hero in 2022 as he saved Randal Kolo Muani’s effort late on – and his performances for club and country make him admired as one of the best goalkeepers in world football.

After announcing the arrival of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo green-lighting a move to Old Trafford, Argentine outlet TyC Sports have reported that Martinez could say goodbye to Aston Villa in the summer, with Manchester United on red alert.
