Cressy shares plans to 'step away from the Tour'

American cites back injury

Maxime Cressy is taking a break from the ATP Tour, the 28-year-old shared on Instagram this week, citing a persistent back injury.

Renowned for his serve-and-volley game, the former No. 31 in the PIF ATP Rankings has not played a tour-level match since last July in Washington and has only made a handful of appearances on the ATP Challenger Tour this season.

"I just wanted to be honest and transparent: I’ve decided to step away from the Tour for the time being to focus on recovering from an ongoing lower back injury," Cressy wrote.

"Since 2023, I have had severe lower back pain but I played through it again and again. Today, it has reached a point where I can no longer compete in an entire match competitively. I have dedicated my entire life to becoming the best tennis player I can be, I wished it was to be the best but I know that I have given my absolute best effort and I have the peace of mind with that knowingness."

The American lifted his maiden tour-level trophy at the ATP 250 in Newport in 2022, the same season he reached the fourth round of the Australian Open. Cressy reached three additional finals spanning 2022-23 while enjoying nearly a full year inside the Top 50 of the PIF ATP Rankings.

Cressy added: "I’m grateful for the support and love I’ve received throughout my career, and for those who’ve stood beside me both on and off the court."
