Jack Grealish is set to end his Manchester City nightmare after agreeing a loan transfer to Everton, who will have the option to buy him for £50million.

However, the England international has been warned that the Premier League club might not be the best place for him to revitalise his career.

Before the end of last season, Pep Guardiola informed Grealish that he was no longer wanted at the Etihad, a point that was made abundantly clear when he was left out of City’s Club World Cup squad.

The 29-year-old joined the Citizens from Aston Villa for a club-record £100m in 2021 and was a key player in the team that won the treble two years later.

But the attacking midfielder’s influence and game time have waned ever since, scoring just one goal in the league last season, while he was also left out of the England squad for Euro 2024.

Grealish is hoping that a fresh start away from Manchester will see his best form return and put him in contention for Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions squad ahead of next summer’s World Cup.

Serie A champions Napoli were very interested in his services but Everton have got the deal done and Grealish could make his Toffees debut next Monday when they travel to Leeds United for their first game of the new season.

‘Jack Grealish to Everton has jeopardy written all over it’

The transfer looks like a win-win for both player and club, but talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordon isn’t convinced Grealish will be able to get back to his best at Everton.

‘We see these signings of players that are big names in football clubs that go out on loan and seem to very rarely do anything meaningful,’ the former Crystal Palace owner said.

‘We saw Raheem Sterling go to Arsenal, nothing. We’ve seen Jadon Sancho go to Chelsea, not much.

‘Jack Grealish, it’s not his fault he has a £100million price tag. He never was a £100million footballer. It’s interesting to see the way David Moyes plays because he doesn’t feel like a Moyesy player to me in any shape or form.

‘The big criticism at West Ham was once upon a time he [Moyes] didn’t have the toolkit to be able to play ambitious football. Towards the end of his tenure, he had talented players in the middle of the park in [Lucas] Paqueta and [Mohammed] Kudus, and he still didn’t play a game of football that the West Ham fans enjoyed watching.

‘For Jack Grealish, he needs to play. I assumed he’d go to Napoli or somewhere like that rather than go to an Everton side that are still a long way away from going back to being a very competitive side in the Premier League, that’s looking upwards rather than downwards.

‘But they’ve made the deal, and it has jeopardy written all over it. I think there’s a lot of money involved in players’ wages and very rarely do these work. This is a deal that could benefit neither one of them.’

There’s been a great amount of turnover in Everton’s squad this summer, with eight players out and five in, including Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall who has joined from Chelsea for £29m.

‘In a team of fetchers and carriers, he [Grealish] is a carrier and the reality is I don’t know how many fetchers Everton have got,’ Jordan added.

‘The quality of players they’ve got to get the ball out to him, to put him in the game is going to be the challenge for him. Whereas, he’s had the embarrassment of riches at Man City who have got players that can do certain things, but he couldn’t get into the side.

‘So, he can now get into this side, but the fetchers aren’t going to be good enough to give him the quality of service.’
