Indonesia’s Janice Tjen defeated Australia’s Kimberly Birrell to capture the Chennai Open 2025 WTA 250 tennis tournament title at SDAT Stadium on Sunday.World No. 82 Janice Tjen beat Kimberly Birrell, 117th in the women’s singles tennis rankings, 6-4, 6-3 in two hours and one minute.Fourth seed Janice Tjen broke seventh-seeded Kimberly Birrell’s serve in the opening game of the first set. Kimberly Birrell had numerous opportunities to break back, including a marathon fourth before finally managing to draw level in the sixth game.However, Janice Tjen broke Kimberly Birrell’s serve once again in the very next game and went on to hold her serve as she closed out the first set.The second set saw Janice Tjen break the Australian in the first and third game before losing her serve in the sixth. The Indonesian tennis player, though, broke Kimberly Birrell in the ninth game again to win the final in straight sets.This was the second singles WTA title for the 23-year-old Janice Tjen. She won her maiden singles and doubles titles at the Jinan Open and Suzhou Open, respectively, last month.Earlier in the tournament, Janice Tjen beat Germany’s Caroline Werner in the opening round before overcoming Linda Fruhvirtova of Czechia in the second.She then went on to beat Slovakia’s Mia Pohankova and Thailand’s Lanlana Tararudee in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, respectively.Meanwhile, third seed and Paris 2024 silver medallist Donna Vekić of Croatia had crashed out of the Chennai Open after a 6-4, 6-0 quarter-final defeat at the hands of Kimberly Birrell on Friday.India’s 16-year-old prodigy Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi endured an opening round exit after losing to compatriot Shrivalli Bhamidipaty 6-4, 6-1.India’s campaign came to an end in the second round after both Shrivalli Bhamidipaty and Sahaja Yamalapalli suffered straight-set losses.
