Ange Postecoglou has been sacked as manager of English Premier League team Tottenham Hotspur, just two weeks after he delivered the north London club its first silverware in 17 years. The 59-year-old Australian was two seasons in to a four-year contract at Spurs.Tottenham won last month's Europa League final, sparking wild celebrations among the club's long-suffering supporters and speculation Postecoglou may be spared. However, the club's disappointing EPL season — its worst ever — was too much for powerbrokers.Despite having one of the more expensive squads in the top flight of English football, Spurs finished 17th, just above the relegation zone.Postecoglou was the first Australian to manage in the Premier League. At a parade last month celebrating the Europa League win, Postecoglou told fans "season three is better than season two".He was born in Greece and moved Down Under with his family aged five.In a statement released Friday, local time, Postecoglou said he was proud of his achievements at Tottenham."The opportunity to lead one of England's historic football clubs and bring back the glory it deserves will live with me for a lifetime," he said."Sharing that experience with all those who truly love this club and seeing the impact it had on them is something I will never forget."He also said the foundations had been laid so "this club should not have to wait 17 years for its next success".Ange Postecoglou had been in charge of Tottenham for two seasons. He will always be welcome back at our home," it read.Postecoglou's tenure was punctuated with outbursts, at fans and journalists, who criticised Spurs performances.Earlier this week, he told the ABC's Australian Story program winning a trophy with Tottenham had fulfilled a dream."I have no doubt that for me the mission when I joined the football club was to win a trophy," he says.Postecoglou has previously managed teams in Australia's A-League, as well as the men's national team, the Socceroos. He has also coached in Japan, before being headhunted by Scottish giants Celtic, where he became popular figure after steering the squad to significant successes, including a the so-called domestic treble of winning all three of the country's major trophies during the 2022-23 season.Tottenham have not announced whom they plan to replace Postecoglou with.
