Iyer, stationed at backward point, sprinted towards the ball and leapt to complete the catch, ending a 59-run stand. However, he landed awkwardly on his left side immediately after taking the catch. The 30-year-old remained on the ground in visible discomfort as teammates surrounded him. The medical staff quickly rushed in, and after receiving on-field attention, Iyer was helped off the field by a support staff member.

Carey, who had earlier been dropped by Prasidh Krishna off Kuldeep Yadav, departed for 24 off 37 balls. Iyer’s injury added to India’s growing list of fitness concerns on the Australia tour. Earlier in the day, captain Shubman Gill confirmed at the toss that Nitish Kumar Reddy and Arshdeep Singh were unavailable, with Prasidh Krishna and Kuldeep Yadav brought into the playing XI. The BCCI later clarified that Nitish had sustained a left quadriceps injury during the second ODI in Adelaide and was being monitored by the medical team. The 22-year-old had struggled in that match, scoring eight runs and going wicketless in his three-over spell. While Arshdeep’s omission was not officially explained, the left-arm pacer was seen cramping during the previous match and had required medical attention on the sidelines.

He has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation and assessment of his injury. India will now be awaiting further reports on Iyer’s condition as the team continues to navigate a series marked by fitness setbacks.
