The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that Rishabh Pant will not keep wickets for the entirety of Day 2 at Lord’s after failing to fully recover from the blow he suffered on his left index finger on Thursday (July 10). Dhruv Jurel will take the gloves again.

Pant was hurt trying to field a wide ball down the leg side on Jasprit Bumrah’s bowling. It looked like he was hit on the tip of his fingers as he winced in pain. The physios treated him for a while, and he continued briefly before walking back into the pavilion. Jurel took the gloves from the 36th over.

“Rishabh Pant is still recovering from the hit on his left index finger. The BCCI medical team continues to monitor his progress. Dhruv Jurel will continue to keep wickets on Day 2," the board said in a statement.

Reports from Lord’s before the start of the day’s play noted how Pant wasn’t doing much wicketkeeping practice. He instead worked with batting coach Sitanshu Kotak and didn’t look quite comfortable trying to play a few shots either.

Jurel did quite well in his absence on Day 1, taking an important reflex catch of Ollie Pope off Ravindra Jadeja’s bowling. India will feel quite comfortable with gloves in their hands. But England ended the day at 251/4, and given the sticky nature of the wicket, India will probably get a chance to bat at some point before Stumps.

The visitors would sweat over Pant’s possible unavailability with the bat. It’s not that Jurel isn’t good enough as a batter, but the International Cricket Council (ICC) doesn’t allow substitute fielders to bat or bowl. Only concussion substitutes are allowed that luxury.

Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC)’s law 24.1.2 states: “A substitute shall not bowl or act as captain but may act as wicket-keeper only with the consent of the umpires."

Pant was India’s best batter at Headingley in the first match, becoming the first wicketkeeper in the country ever to score two centuries in a Test. In the second, he notched 25 and 65 as India leveled the series 1-1.
