Two months ago Liverpool were eliminated from the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain - a fate that could also be experienced by rivals Arsenal tonight. Ahead of their crucial semi-final clash, Mohamed Salah has revealed he told players from the French club to 'go and win it' in a great show of sportsmanship.

The Reds are of course Premier League champions, crowned at the end of April by making sure the Gunners cannot mathematically catch them, in what has been a stellar first season on the scene for Arne Slot. The only blips came in March, when the side were first dumped out of Europe and then lost the Carabao Cup final.

The Champions League journey came to an end after a round of 16 tie with PSG was split one goal apiece after three hours of football, then the French side clearly came out on top 4-1 in an Anfield penalty shootout.

"I have to be honest. PSG had a very good first leg. We were so lucky. Alisson had the best game of his career at Liverpool. They were very unlucky.

"Then they came to Anfield. And we were the ones who were unlucky because we hit the post two or three times, they saved balls on their line once or twice. So we were unlucky too," Salah has told France Football via L'Equipe in reflection.

"In this match, everything was 50/50. Who deserved to qualify more? No one could say.

"We had a very good second leg, they had a very good first leg. And you lose on penalties... sometimes it's your day. Sometimes it's mine. It was their day.

"No one would say, 'They deserved it 100 percent!' No.

"The first leg, yes. The second, no. It's the same for us. The second leg, yes. The first, no."

Understandably so, the 32-year-old was left downtrodden at the missed opportunity to add a second Champions League winners' medal to his cabinet. After all, at the time it was unclear if it would be his last chance or not.

But accepting his side had just lost to a team who looked even at that earlier stage to be possible competition winners, in a sportsmanly way he wished PSG's players well in their quest.

"It was their day and I shook the players' hands afterward, I said to them: 'Congratulations, go win it!' and that was it."

It just so happens that if PSG were to go all the way, they have also had to defeat Aston Villa at the quarter-final stage and now they would also have to knock out the Reds' big rivals this season, Arsenal, to set up a final with Inter Milan.

Luis Enrique's side lead Mikel Arteta's by one goal after their first leg, now all is to be settled tonight in the second meeting at the Parc des Princes.
