Shreyas Iyer played the starring role as Punjab Kings recovered from an abject defeat in the first qualifier to edge past Mumbai Indians on Sunday night and punch their ticket for the IPL 2025 final. Iyer, the PBKS captain, slammed an unbeaten 87 off 41 in a successful chase of 204 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

While he looked incredibly calm after hitting the match-winning six, avoiding exaggerated celebrations, he did lose his cool after spotting teammate Shashank Singh during the ritual post-match handshake.

So what triggered the reaction?

Well, Shashank had a major role.

With PBKS seemingly taking control of the chase as the contest entered the death overs, Shashank ended up taking it too easy as was evident when he jogged for a single that resulted in him being run out and thus giving MI an opening.

The dismissal happened off the fourth delivery of the 17th over as PBKS needed 35 to win off 21 deliveries with six wickets remaining. Having driven a low full toss from Trent Boult to mid-on, Shashank was ambling towards the non-striker’s end with an alert Hardik Pandya spotted the opportunity and made a direct hit.

TV umpire was pressed into action and one replay was enough to conclude Shashank, despite his late reaction to speed up, was well short of his crease.

Shashank looked frustrated at himself as he returned to the dug-out having scored 2 off 3.

However, Iyer, in red-hot form, ensured the dismissal didn’t shift the momentum as he singlehandedly took PBKS over the line. This is the first time that PBKS have qualified for the final since 2014 when they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders and were known as Kings XI Punjab.

PBKS will now have just a day to recover from the contest that went late into the night thanks to a rain-delayed start before facing a red-hot RCB in the title clash at the same venue.
